A Few Random Notes About Casting With A Fly Rod

JOHNNIE W.LOGAN

In every sport one transfers the weight of the body into movemet;but, for some unknown reason fisherman stand in the same plane, with the result that the arms do all the work. Stance is very important; when using the double handed rod for instance, which ever hand is uppermost on the handle of the rod, that is the foot you put forward. The caster who is right handed will put his right hand at the top of the handle, and his right foot forward.

When he is ready to pick the line off the water, he will lean slightly forward with the weight on the right foot; transfering the weight to the left foot during the back cast. It is v ery importalnt that you do not exaggerate this movement; you will find that the slight movement will take all the effort from the arms and shoulders.

The next important point to remember; DO NOT GRIP THE ROD TOO TIGHTLY WITH LEFT HAND, this hand is used to put speed into the rod. If you are left handed, it is the reverse; he left hand uppermost on the rod, left foot forward. Using a single handed rod you can have either foot forward; RIGHT foot forward for accuracy, LEFT foot forward for distance. Consider; if you want to throw a ball a great distance, you stand with your left foot foward; that is if you right hand is your master hand.

To obtain distance with the single or double handed rod you do not use strength but speed; in trout fishing you use the double haul to assist the rod to speed up the line, using the doublehanded rod, the left or bottom hand pulls the butt of the rod smartly into the body; just below the left breast pocket, this puts speed into the tip of the rod.

When you are watching the demonstrations; pay particular attention to the tip of the double handed rod during the roll cast of a long line; the rod tip will only travel from 1 o'clock to 11 o'c1ock, this will teach you much.

This is your opportuhity to ask as many questions as you wish; we are here to help.

As I said before stance is very important; if you do not stand correctly one tends to twist the body making an arc with the tip of the rod causing the line to travel in TWO planes. It is important that the back cast and the forward cast travel in the same plane; otherwise the line will hit itself in the forward cast.

Some people make the back and forward cast in two distinct planes, thinking that this prevents the line hitting the caster or the rod. This is wrong; your line and fly MUST travel over the top of the rod and NEVER near the caster, this is done by a smart pickup putting speed into the line.

Most of us, when we buy a rod try to flex it by the use of physical force; this is wrong, look at your rod and you will see malked there the weight of line recommended to flex your rod. Never under line your rod, use the correct weight or SLIGHTLY over.

Make the rod do the work.
